At Castletroy Dental Clinic we understand that dental expenses can be a big financial outlay, especially with more extensive treatments. The good news is that you may be able to claim tax relief on non-routine dental treatments. Here’s everything you need to know about claiming this relief in 2024.

Understanding Non-Routine Dental Treatments

Non-routine dental treatments are classified as beyond day-to-day care such as check-ups, fillings and cleanings. They typically involve more complex procedures that are necessary for maintaining oral health. Here are some examples of what can be considered non-routine dental treatments:

  • Root canal treatments (Endodontics)
  • Periodontal treatments (e.g., gum disease treatments)
  • Surgical extractions (e.g. Extraction of Impacted wisdom teeth)
  • Crowns, veneers, Inlays and bridgework
  • Post and Core Build-ups
  • Implants
  • Orthodontics (e.g., braces, aligners)

These treatments are often necessary for improving your oral health, correcting dental issues, or restoring the appearance and function of your teeth. Since these procedures tend to be more costly than routine treatments, the Irish tax system provides tax relief to help ease the financial burden.

How Tax Relief Works in 2024

In Ireland, tax relief on non-routine dental treatments is available through the Med 2 Form. The Med 2 form allows taxpayers to claim a portion of the expenses incurred for eligible dental treatments. The tax relief is provided at the standard rate of 20%, which means you can reclaim 20% of the cost of qualifying treatments. For example, if you spent €2,000 on a qualifying non-routine dental treatment, you could claim €400 back in tax relief. Our reception team are happy to complete a Med 2 form for any eligible treatment.

Steps to Claim Tax Relief on Dental Treatment

    1. Ensure Your Treatment Qualifies: Before you can claim tax relief, make sure that the treatment you received qualifies as a non-routine treatment under the Med 2 scheme. Our team will be able to advise you on whether the treatment is eligible for tax relief.
    2. Obtain a Completed Med 2 Form: After you’ve paid for your treatment, our team will complete and sign a Med 2 form for you. This form is crucial as it lists the details of the treatment, the cost, and confirms the eligibility for tax relief.
    3. Submit the Claim through Your Tax Return: You can claim tax relief on your Med 2 form through your annual tax return. This is done via the Revenue’s MyAccount online portal or through a tax agent if you use one. Once logged in, select the “Health Expenses” section, and make sure to include the details from your Med 2 form. For treatments paid in 2024, the claim should be made in your tax return for that year.

Time Limit for Repayment Claims – A claim for repayment of tax must be made within four years after the end of the tax year to which the claim relates.

    1. Keep Your Receipts and Records: It’s important to keep all receipts and records of payment, as the Revenue may ask for evidence to support your claim. If you have misplaced any receipts from treatment carried out with us in recent years please reach out to our office team and they will assist you.
    2.  Who Can Claim the Relief? Tax relief for non-routine dental treatments can be claimed by the person who paid for the treatment. It doesn’t have to be for yourself—if you paid for a family member’s dental care (e.g., spouse, children, or dependent relatives), you can also claim tax relief on their behalf.

    Limitations and Important Considerations

    • Routine Treatments Do Not Qualify: Treatments such as regular dental check-ups, cleanings, fillings and extractions (unless surgical) do not qualify for tax relief. Dentures,  occlusal splints and cosmetic procedures, like teeth whitening, also do not qualify.
    • Time Limits on Claims: You can claim tax relief for treatments paid in previous years (up to four years prior), so it’s worth checking if you have any qualifying treatments that you haven’t yet claimed for.

    Conclusion

Dental health is an important part of your overall well-being, and if you find yourself needing non-routine dental treatment, make sure to take advantage of the tax relief available to you. By being proactive, keeping your records in order, and understanding the claims process, you can reduce your costs and focus on maintaining a healthy smile.
